The Living Forest

The Living Forest

As the sun sets the boy runs, looking back over his shoulder from time to time searching for his pursuers and then suddenly his body hits what feels like a wall of wood. The Living Forest – the place all the town’s people fear. It is said in the town that he grew up in, once a person enters this forest they never come back. Pushing his way through the thick branches, he begins to notice that a pathway in front of him starts to form. Whereas this forest was once blocking his path, now it seems to welcome him in, drawing each of his steps closer with the trees bending and giving him free room to move. He can hear what seems to be almost a windy voice, as if the trees and plants are speaking to one another. Could the legends be true? Could this forest really be alive? As he turns behind him one last time to see if he is still being chased, he notices that the trees that allowed him to pass have formed a wall again, not allowing any others to venture forth and the boy somehow knows – the life he once lived is over, and a new life for him is about to begin.

Though he is young, he remains calm for what is about to come. The plants grab hold of his feet in an inviting way. The tree branches spring forth to life from the ground and wrap around his body. When he next opens his eyes he takes a minute as though a whole new life flickers before him for the first time. He can now see everything clearly and his new living tree family welcomes him home. The trees were indeed moving, alive as any other person who walks upon two legs. The plants are alive and playful, and the leaves that were once crushed upon by his feet now dance along the ground as though they were fish amongst a beautiful ocean. They call it The Living Forest, The Forest of No Return… we however call it by a different name…. we call it home. --- The forest grows full of Arabian sandalwood, cedar and pine, lined with wet oak moss and loose dirt.
